Help

This section provides a guide to how to get our books onto your device, and what to try if you run into problems.

It's intended to help if:

  • you're not sure what retailer to buy from
  • you're concerned that buying from a specific retailer will leave you with a file you can't use
  • you've bought a book and are having trouble getting it onto your device or opening it.

How it works will depend on what kind of device you're using and what store you buy from. So see below for your specific circumstances.

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT WHICH STORES TO BUY FROM

We're keen for you to buy your books direct from us, the publishers. It means authors get a bigger cut from each sale, and it means we get to cut out the shitty, exploitative multi-national companies that have a strangle-hold on the market and society.

But if you're not that keen to buy direct from us because you'd rather go through a more well-known, established retailer, we'd suggest Smashwords in the first instance because it's by authors, for authors.

BUYING FROM BUNKMATE BOOKS

If you buy an ebook from the Bunkmate Books online store, you'll be taken to a page with a download link for the book. You'll also be emailed the link in case you need to download it again later. How you open the book once you've downloaded it will depend on your device, so see below for the specifics depending on what you're using.

Apple iOS and Mac

Once you've downloaded the file it should automatically show up in your Apple Books app.

Android

Android doesn't have a built in e-reader app but there are several you can choose from the Google Play Store. You could try eboox, PocketBook, or ReadEra.

How you get it into the app will depend on which app you choose and how you buy it. But generally speaking, if you download the ebook file onto your device the app should be able to find it and open it. If you have trouble, try a different app.

Windows

Check out this guide from Windows about how to use ebook files on their devices.

Kindle

There's a bunch of ways to put books onto your Kindle that haven't been bought from Amazon - including by email, USB, the Send To Kindle site or by using Calibre.

BUYING FROM OTHER RETAILERS

If you're buying from other retailers, here's what you should know depending on what device you're using.

Apple Store

If you buy a book from the Apple Store you should be able to open it in the Apple Books app. Just open the app and it should update straight away.

Google Play

You can download the Play Books app, and any ebook you've bought from Google Play should show up in your library and allow you to read it in the app.

Amazon

Any ebooks you buy through Amazon will show up in your library on your Kindle or in the Kindle app.

Smashwords

When you buy an ebook from Smashwords you receive a link to download it onto your device. Once you've done that, how you access it will depend on which device you're on.

Patreon

When you buy an ebook from a Patreon creator's store you receive a link to download it onto your device. Once you've done that, how you access it will depend on which device you're on.

HELP WITH OTHER ISSUES

If you run into other problems - like features that aren't working as they should, or content that doesn't seem to be correct - contact us for support.

If in doubt, check your emails. Whenever you buy something or subscribe for something from us you should receive an email to confirm, which will usually have all the info and links you need.

We're a small outfit that doesn't have someone responding to customer queries full time, so we might not reply immediately. But we generally should reply within around a day.
